Selection tools

Marquee – Lasso – Magic Wand

Options bar

Anti alias – always check

Feather – never check – unless you have a specific reason to (RARE)

4 boxes – New selection: Add to: Subtract from: Intersect with:

Contiguous – pixels touching, uncheck if you want to select similar pixels

that don’t touch

Tolerance – looks at color, the higher the number the more colors the tool will select

Modify

Transform – transforms the selection or marching ants, not actual pixels

Feather – this is where to feather, not in options bar

Save & load – selections are saved as channels

Quick Mask

Uses painting tools for making selections (not selection tools)

Painting with Black – subtracts from selection

Painting with White – adds to selection

Shortcuts

Command H – hides the marching ants, they are still there, you just can’t see them

Command H again brings them back into view

Spacebar while making selection - repositions selection before completing

Shift after the selection - to add to selection– or use 2^nd box in Options Bar

Shift during the selection - makes square or round with Marquee tool

Opt after the selection to - subtract from selection – or use 3^rd box in Options Bar

Keyboard Shortcuts

M – Marquee tool

Shift M – for nested tools under Marquee

L – Lasso tool

Shift L – for nested tools under Lasso

W – Magic Wand
